A periodontist deals with a wide range of oral procedures, with the most common being the treatment of periodontitis.
What is periodontitis?
Periodontitis is an infection of the tissues surrounding the teeth, such as the gums and bone. It is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
Why is it dangerous?
Usually, periodontitis does not cause pain, which makes it difficult to detect early. It is possible for someone to have the disease without knowing it. According to statistics, more than 75% of people over the age of 50 may have at least one diseased tooth.
How is it caused?
Periodontitis is caused by microbes that accumulate on the root surface of the teeth. These microbes produce toxins, which damage the gums and bone around the teeth.
